Bring me Flowers

Inspiration for week 3 of Wanderlust was brought to us by Wilna Furstenberg.

Wilna's inspiration for her art journal pages,
was taken from flowers
& the repetition of a theme.

My interpretation is below.

I have used a watercolour page from my art journal,
as the base for my piece this week.

I divided the page into three,
then added acrylic paints (Orchid & Rose).

Stencilled over with white gesso.

Then I added some flowers cut from an old magazine
& coated them in clear gesso.

I made some more washi tape from Kasia's collage sheet
& added torn paper from the rest,
with a reminder cut from an old novel.

From this piece I will remember the essence of Wilna's lesson,
without having copied her example or her style.

For now that is enough.

A Little Nonsense

The inspiration for Wanderlust Week 2 comes from Mary Wangerin.

She used a quotation by Roald Dahl as inspiration for her artwork,
so I looked for one that would inspire me.

"A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men."

Thus A Little Nonsense was created.

I used a piece of cardboard, 6 x 6 inches, coating it first with white gesso.

I then added pieces of paper & washi tape to cover my "canvas".

I left it overnight to dry thoroughly.

Next came a coating of clear gesso.

Around the edges I added white acrylic paint, over crackle glaze,
then rubbed Distress Inks (broken china & picket fence)
& Gelatos (Chocolate & Snow Cone).

To create my focal point, I added a piece of torn cardboard box
& my favourite butterfly, covered in Perfect Pearls.

Guess I didn't quite follow the lesson,
but I like it.

Let's Play

I was able to have some quiet time to myself today,
so I replayed the Wanderlust Week One video lesson by Kasia
& made another page for my journal.

This time I used her printable collage sheet,
made some washi-style tape
& just played.

Which is number one on my list.

The photograph is an old family picture.
They look as though they are mid-stride
as they walk along the promenade at the coast,
on their own adventure.

The couple wearing hats are my Great-Grandparents.

The base is a piece of Tim Holtz Idea-ology kraft cardstock.
This piece has a star resist motif.

I have also used his Distress Crayons
(picked raspberry & spiced marmalade)
together with a black Stabilo All pencil.

I love the different layers & textures.

Start as you mean to go on

is a year long online mixed media & art journal course,
run by Kasia & Jamie at
.
Each week there will be video tutorials to guide & inspire us.

Last year I used a small Dylusion Art Journal,
which I loved,
however as the year progressed & my journal got fatter,
it got harder & harder to work in.

This year I have decided to create my own journal,
using a variety of loose pages,
all measuring 5½ by 8 inches.

The journal cover is a piece of corrugated card,
covered in a textured wallpaper sample,
with Tim Holtz Grungeboard alpha & numerals.

The inside cover holds the three words
I chose to focus on during this year long course.

play
refine
develop

Week 1
I am starting simply.

My paper this week is watercolour paper.

Background of acrylic paint (Pistachio)
a little mixed with Golden Soft Gel Medium (to add transparency),
a little mixed with Golden White Gesso.

A hint of stencilling, using gesso,
then splattered with watered down white gesso
& watered down acrylic paint (Black).

This week we were encouraged to spend some time to gather
& record our thoughts, creating a statement of intent
for the New Year.

Mine were printed & adhered with gel medium.

The word January was cut from a calendar,
(free with this month's Waitrose magazine).

Finally some Distress Crayon (mustard seed & twisted citron)
& Dylusions Paint Pen (White Linen)
& Ohto Fude Ball 1.5 (Black)

Video: My 2016 Art Journal

During 2016, I completed a page in my Art Journal,
each week for 52 weeks,
inspired by the creative prompts on Colour Me Positive,
graphics from past Brave Girl University classes
& incorporating my set of Artist Trading Cards
made for The Craft Barn Alpha Challenge,
on my year long theme of
 Resilience.

I have gone back,
at various stages,
throughout the year
& added to the pages,
here & there.

Therefore I have made a short video
so you can see the completed art journal,
page by page.

I hope you enjoy watching.

Art Journal Week 52

This is my art journal page for week 52,
the final week in my 2016 Art Journal.

I have used graphics from past classes at BGU.

The Artist Trading Card (ATC) is the final in my series
for The Craft Barn Alpha Challenge.
You can read more about it here.

The background has a white gesso base,
with a thin layer of watered down acrylic paint (Pistachio),

Here are my art journal pages for weeks 51 & 52 side by side.

The last two words from the book I have used to source text,
seems quite apt here.
